Did You Say Black Cake?!

I found another beautiful black cake I want to eat. So I started looking into how I might be able to recreate this at home. Here’s my easy recipe for black icing:

  • 1/2 a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tube of black gel food coloring

  • 1 can of vanilla flavor Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy Frosting

Start by mixing just 1 tsp. of the food coloring gel into the frosting. Then add about 1/2 a cup of the cocoa powder. Stir everything up and check your color. It’s probably more of a dark gray than black. Keep adding food coloring 1 tsp. at a time until you get your desired shade.

Happy frosting!

Tea Time

It’s time for some tea. For me, afternoon tea is about indulging in some ‘me-time’ and taking a moment to relax and enjoy some delicate savouries. It’s kind of like a mini special occasion, with a treat. A chance to sit and chat with a friend, read a book or simply enjoy the day with a hot beverage. I realized today, when I wanted to do just that, that I don’t own a proper tea set. And it doesn’t quite feel like a fancy little occasion when you use coffee cups. Time to go shopping.

Here’s what I found so far: I’m leaning towards the black tea set…surprise. All though, the lavender is quite pretty and I like the tea pot that comes with that set a lot more. Decisions, decisions.

Chocolate Macaron

I love black desserts, cause it almost always means it’s chocolate. And one of my besties makes a mean chocolate macaron. Here’s her recipe for macarons that are as dark as your soul. Thanks Andrea!

  • 1 egg white

  • 1 tablespoon meringue powder

  • 1/3 cup + 11/2 teaspoons almond meal

  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar

  • 3 drops extract of vanilla

  • small dollop of black food gel

For the filling

  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Begin by bringing the egg white to room temperature and line a small half-sheet pan with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, sift together almond meal and powdered sugar. In a medium bowl, beat the egg white with an electric mixer. Once frothy, slowly add the merginue powder while beating continuously.

Once the meringue has soft floppy peaks, stop beating. Then, in 3 increments, add in the the almond meal and powdered sugar. Gently fold it in using a spatula. Then, add the vanilla extract.

Once everything is well incorporated, scoop the mixture into a plastic bag or pastry bag and squeeze the mixture down to one side and snip the corner off of the bag. Squeeze gently to make 12 perfectly round circles on the baking pan. Gently press away any peaks.

Let the cookies sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking. Before the cookies go into the oven, they should appear dry. Preheat the oven to 300° while you wait. Bake the cookies in the middle rack of the oven for 15 minutes. They are done when the tops are dry and they have risen up.

Let cool on the baking sheet, then carefully peel them off the parchment paper, and move them to a rack. Meanwhile, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar to make the filling. Dot it on 6 of the macarons, and top with the remaining cookies to make sandwiches.

Never Make Important Decisions On An Empty Stomach

Did you know researchers pinned down a hormone that is produced when we are hungry that interferes with rationality and decision-making?

You’re more likely to act on impulse when you’re hungry. And each individual can be more or less impulsive depending on the situation. So have a good meal before you make any rash decisions you may regret later. Take your time to analyze the situation and your options. Rushing into things is never a good thing.

Baked Donuts

Baked donuts? Crazy talk right? Nope. They’re easy to make and delicious. I got this recipe from my bestie (thanks cm) who makes the best desserts.

Combine 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar, strawberries and milk in a medium-size bowl and stir well. Add more powdered sugar until the mixture is a thick glaze. Then dip your baked donut tops into the glaze and let them cool until the glaze is set.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray your donut pan with nonstick spray. Then mix together eggs, buttermilk, oil, sugar, salt, baking powder and I like to add a little vanilla. Stir in flour and mix until smooth. Fill the donut pans up about 3/4 of the way and bake for 15 minutes. Waiting is the hardest part…

And finally, have a donut party…ENJOY!

Donuts Make Mondays Better

Good morning sunshine! It’s Monday and it’s all good. My 🖤 brought me donuts and coffee in bed. I knew he was a keeper!

This Is My Happy Hour

There's no question that a good cup of coffee can help start your day on the right foot. It's why I can't live without my Keurig. My two favorite K-cup flavors are always in stock at my house.

Green Mountain Caramel Vanilla Cream is light and flavorful. I like it best with creamer and a touch of cinnamon. It’s perfect for lazy mornings when I need something sweet.

Donut Shop (regular) is my go-to. It's got a nice flavor without the artificial aftertaste you get from some other brands. It really tastes like an authentic coffee you'd get in a café. This one is great for the afternoon break. YUM

Black Chocolate

Our ten year wedding anniversary is coming up soon and we haven't decided if we're having a party or a small gathering. Either way, I'm getting a black cake.

Over the last year, gorgeous black cakes have been popping up everywhere. And I am loving this look. Black is such a bold color and it creates a wonderful contrast with white, soft pastels, neons and more.

Love it!

Celebrating Donuts

My favorite way to start the day is with a hot cup of coffee. And maybe a donut…or two. Lucky for me it's National Donut Day...not that I need an excuse!

Did you know National Donut day started in 1938? It started as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army of Chicago, IL. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression.

I Didn't Mean It

Coffee is magic. It energizes you and improves your memory, and it has been linked to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. But miss one cup, and suddenly you feel like total crap!

THE REASON: Caffeine causes your blood vessels to constrict, which reduces blood flow to your brain. It can make you irritable, foggy, anxious, and even depressed, according to a review in the journal Pharmacology. If you're used to a daily dose of caffeine, skipping one cup is enough to throw your system out of whack! So be kind to yourself and others, have some coffee.

Blackberry Margaritas

It's National Margarita Day!

I can always count on my friend DC for the best drink recipes. She’s famous for her Bloody Mary! And today she made me the most delicious margarita I’ve ever had: a blackberry margarita.

  1. 1.5 cup blackberries

  2. 2 tablespoons sugar

  3. 1/4 cup lime juice

  4. 5 ounces tequila

  5. 2 ounces triple sec

  6. 2 cups ice cubes

Blend the ingredients in the blender on CRUSH ICE. Rub the rims of glasses with a wedge of lime and dip in a dish of sugar. Pour in margarita and ENJOY!

Ice Cream As Dark As My Soul

Black food is everywhere, and I’m loving it. Activated charcoal, the ingredient that creates this “super-black” hue, has made its way into ice creams that are as black as your cold, dark soul. On a super hot day like today, I’m headed to Little Damage in Downtown Los Angeles to get me some of that.

National Mojito Day

Happy National Mojito Day !

Looking to add an extra fruity flavor to your classic mojito? Throw in some blackberries for a tart and tasty beverage.

Here's my favorite Blackberry Mojito recipe:

  • 2 ounces white rum

  • 2 ounces club soda

  • 1/2 ounce lime juice

  • 4-5 mint leaves

  • 3 blackberries

  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup (1 tablespoon of sugar will do)

  • Cup of ice

Feeling like I need a bit of a pick-me-up.

Coffee always does the trick.
